Dr. Agnieszka Nitza-Makowska

Dr. Agnieszka Nitza-Makowska is a Research Fellow in Asian Studies at the Asia Centre, University of Tartu, Estonia; an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations at Civitas University in Warsaw, Poland; and an analyst at the Academic Centre for Strategic Analysis, War Studies University, Warsaw, Poland.

Her scholarly interests encompass foreign policy, soft power, small states, and sustainable development, with a regional focus on China, India, Pakistan, and the Baltic states. She has published widely in peer-reviewed journals. Her most recent publications include “Non-Alignment 2.0 and South Asia’s Neutrality in the Russia–Ukraine War” (Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization, 2026), “Is China Losing Its Soft Power in the Ukraine War? Evidence from the Indo-Pacific” (Asia Europe Journal, 2026), and the book chapter “Global South Agency in the International Climate Regime: China’s Status as a ‘Responsible Great Power’ in the Spotlight,” published in India, China, and Climate Change Governance (Routledge, 2026). She is co-editor, with Amit Ranjan and Elo Süld, of India, China, and Climate Change Governance: Leadership and Responsibility in the Asian Global South (Routledge, 2026).

Agnieszka has served as a co-investigator on the projects The Political, Economic and Cultural Role of Asia for Northern and Eastern Europe (2022–2023), The Impact of the Ukrainian War on Geopolitical Developments in South Asia (2022–2023), and China’s and India’s Foreign Policy and Sustainable Development in the New Geopolitical Context (since 2023). From 2021 to 2025, she led the Polish National Science Centre SONATA 16 project Environmental Diplomacy as a Soft Power Instrument: China and the Belt and Road Initiative. She was awarded a fellowship at the Center for Global Development, Shanghai University (2021–2022), and undertook research and teaching stays at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Sciences Po in Paris. Beyond academia, she has provided expert analysis and policy advice to governmental bodies in EU member states.
